"Human"
Part 3

"Max! Max, come out or you'll be late for school," Mr. Evans yelled from the other side of the door. Max had locked himself in his room after seeing the pictures.

"Let me try," Diane Evans told her husband. "Max, please open the door. Let us know what's going on." Max didn't answer.

Inside his room, Max's mind was racing. How could he suddenly wake up human? After thinking it over, Max remembered the eerie glow of the granolith the night before. 'But how could I wish myself human?' he thought.

Max looked around his room uneasily. His room looked the same. He couldn't find anything usual about it. Then he saw a picture of Liz on his nightstand. Maybe going to school wasn't a bad idea after all. Once he found the others, they could help him.

Max suddenly opened the door. His parents were waiting outside and rushed to hug him. "Max, tell us what's going on?" his mom pleaded.

"I had a dream," he lied. "A nightmare, more like it. It felt so real."

"A dream?" his dad said skeptical.

"Yes."

"Are you sure that's all Max?" his mom said concerned.

Max nodded. "I didn't mean to freak out on you. I'm gonna leave now. I don't want to be too late."

"Okay. Maybe we can talk about this later," his dad said.

Max didn't answer. He went back into his room to pick up his book bag and left.

Max closed his locker. It was between 2nd and 3rd period and he still hadn't seen anyone yet. And he was starting to feel some limitations of being human. All of his senses felt numb. His range of hearing was shorter and he had to pay more attention in class.

"Hey Max," someone suddenly said.

"Liz?"

"Duh!" she laughed and pulled him in for a kiss. Max let himself get lost in the moment. Liz was kissing him. Was this a dream?

"I'm filling in for Melissa today at the restaurant so I can't hang out at practice today," Liz said.

"Liz, what are you talking about? I need to speak to you."

"I have to get to class. See you later," she said and started to leave. Did she hear anything he said?

"Wait! It's important."

She touched his cheek and said "Later." Then she was gone.

'What was that about?' Max thought and leaned against his locker. He shook his head to started to his next class. 'What is going on?' he thought. When he thought things couldn't get weirder he heard another familiar voice.

He turned to see Isabel talking some of her friends.
