"Missing Link"
by Bandbabe

Summary: Max tries not to question his past.
Author Note: Inspired by a discussion in the "Michael's Importance to the Alien Mythology" thread at Fan Forum, this fic deals with how the Aliens' past lives might have more to deal with their present life than it is realized. Look for a possible sequel or series called "Shadows Of The Past".

Fate. It was his fate to be with Liz, his one and only. He loved her since he first laid eyes on her. The past few months with her had been amazing. He never wanted it to end. But it did. He learned the truth about his past, why he was here, and what he was to do. He learned of his destiny and whom he was destined to be with. He didn't want it.

Conflict. It was embedded into every fiber of his being. Max wanted to be normal. He wanted his life to be simple and uncomplicated. He also wanted to learn of his origins. As long as it didn't interfere with the life he made for himself. But it did.

Now he couldn't run away from who and what he was. He was the leader of an intergalactic rescue mission. His life was about to get more complicated. In fact, it already was. His past life and his present life was already mixing.

Max shuddered at the thought of remembering his past. He had of dream of the past several days ago. It scared him. When he thought of the past he knew it would have good moments and bad moments. This was of a good time. He was walking with his beloved, Tess. It wasn't like a movie or a moment in time. It was a general feeling and emotions. Happiness. Warmth. Belonging. The way the cool air felt on his skin. Love. It was all these things together. It was powerful all at once. Suddenly he knew he had home and felt his past. There was a place out there somewhere, where he was as happy or happier then he was on Earth. That is what scared him.

Ignorance is bliss. Here he was happy. He had a great family, good friends, and his girl, Liz. Max didn't want to re-examine his life on Earth. But secretly, he did. Of all things, he did not want to question his love for Liz. He fell in love with her the first time he saw her. Why did he? Conflict. He felt it again. Who ever said the truth would set you free? Never look back.

"I felt the need to love like that and I felt the need to be loved... like that," Max Evans said aloud at 2am to no one in particular. He stood alone in the dark kitchen and the milk carton fell from his hand. He did it. He actually did it. He acknowledged something that could send his world crashing to the ground. Shadows of the past emerged. He found the missing link.
